Job Description

Rose Brooks Center, a non-profit domestic violence agency, is currently hiring a Part-Time Pet Shelter Advocate. The Pet Shelter Advocate is responsible for the daily operations of the pet shelter facility and related pet advocacy services for families residing in Rose Brooks Center’s emergency shelter. The Pet Shelter Advocate will collaborate within a multidisciplinary team across programs at Rose Brooks Center. This position works within a low-barrier and voluntary participation program and is responsible for providing survivor centered, accessible, and trauma-informed advocacy to pet owners and their pets residing in the emergency shelter. 

OTHER ASPECTS OF THE POSITION:

  • Perform all job responsibilities while demonstrating proficiency in all RBC competencies and a commitment to the overall mission of Rose Brooks Center and according to agency policies and procedures.
  • Participate in all required trainings and optional trainings as determined.
  • Attend required/scheduled staff and team meetings, which may occur outside of normal work hours.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Direct service experience with vulnerable populations, preferably working with survivors of domestic/sexual violence trauma.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and spend a significant amount of work hours standing, walking, bending, and lifting.
  • General knowledge of animal health and behavioral issues.
  • Knowledge of general methods and procedures for managing an animal shelter or kenneling facility.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with or in animal welfare agencies; comfortable with/confident in working with animals.
  • Demonstrated ability to be aware of potentially dangerous situations when working with animals.
  • Demonstrated ability and comfort in working with animals of unknown disposition and those who may exhibit medical or other problems, as well as aggressive tendencies; to respond to and cope with unexpected dog behavior without assistance; ability to remain calm with animals who are in distressed or overstimulated; and demonstrate good judgment in these situations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team.
  • Excellent time-management, problem solving, and organizational skills; ability to work independently.
  • Ability to perform computer skills (including MS Office, database, and security software).
  • Able to transport (drive) clients/pets as needed.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to provide proof of automobile insurance.
 
Preferred:
  • One or more years of animal welfare-related experience, preferably in a domestic violence agency and/or commensurate experience, preferred.
  • Knowledge of local animal welfare resources is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the link between domestic violence and pet abuse.
  • Experience in providing domestic violence advocacy and safety planning.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish.
HOURS: This is a part-time, non-exempt position scheduled Monday-Thursday, 8a-2p and/or 9a-3p. This may require mid and evening shifts and work hours that accommodate participants’ schedules and needs, including some weekend hours and holidays.

COMPENSATION: This position falls into a non-exempt range starting at an hourly rate of $20.
